Feature Story!

Calling all youth! We would like to hear from you! E-mail us a story about something special that you’ve done, and we may post it on this page!

Our first Story is from a young boy named Rory, who loves to volunteer. Thanks, Rory!

Hi, my name is Rory and I am 10 years old. I have lived all my life in Squamish.

I have volunteered in my community since I was little. There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a child to be a part of that village.

Some of the things that I have volunteered for over the past few years are:

Singing in my church choir at the Mountain FM Charity Breakfast in Whistler, singing at the Tsunami Relief benefit and concert, and recently, singing with the Universal Gospel Choir to raise funds for the support and recovery house.

I have also raised money and school supplies for the Emmanuel Boyz Rescue Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.  We have sent them Valentines cards and Christmas gifts too!

We have also packed backpacks with winter supplies for the homeless in Squamish and donated them to the Helping Hands Centre. This project is called Angels with Backpacks!

The most fun I’ve had fundraising was when we did Homeless for a Night. We had to buy a cardboard box and then sleep in it outside for one night.  It rained all night and the boxes got soggy.  We weer not allowed to bring IPods or games and we just had soup and bread for dinner! But we raised over $1,000 for the Squamish Food Bank.

I have also done canned goods drives for Community Christmas Care, I have a little buddy in grade 1 at school, I sing at Hilltop House, I had an Earth Day table at our church Spring Fling and just recently our Sunday School participated in Pitch in Week.

Of course, I still have time to do my homework and play, too! I would like to work with animals when I grow up, maybe for WWF saving endangered species!

If every child and teen volunteered a bit of their time, imagine how much better our community would be!

Thank you for listening to my story.
